“Archie, I’m fine now. Stop fussing.”

Zack lay on the sofa, a light fleece blanket across his legs despite the warmth of the evening. They had caught a cab home, his protestations that he was okay ignored and the Tube would be fine. Archie had said no, he wasn’t taking Zack home on the Underground, which would be hot and stuffy. His face had been set hard and his tone had brooked no argument. Zack had grumbled but acquiesced. It was, after all, nice to be made a fuss of.

“Here you go.” Archie put the tea down on the coffee table, along with the packet of French macaroons.

Zack quirked his brow. “No custard creams?”

“Just eat the damned fancy biscuits. You’re too much of a philistine to appreciate the perfect simplicity of a custard cream.”

They looked at each other and smiled.

Zack picked up and sipped his tea. It felt nice. It was good to be home, just the two of them lounging around and eating biscuits. Easy and relaxed. It was just a shame it hadn’t been like that on the hill.

“What happened out there?” Archie sat at the end of the sofa and pulled Zack’s legs across his lap.

Zack glanced up over the rim of his mug.

“I had an asthma attack. It’s summer. Pollen and pollution. It happens.”

It also happens when I tell you I love you and you don't answer with the words you're supposed to.

“No, it doesn’t just happen. Something triggered it. What was it?” Archie stared at Zack, his blue eyes piercing and intense.

Zack squirmed. He put the tea down and slipped lower into the sofa. He had no idea how he was going to tell Archie what he’d witnessed was not an asthma attack but a panic attack.

“You really scared me, you know?” Archie’s voice, rough and unsteady, cut through Zack’s thoughts.

Zack studied him, and with a hard wrench in his stomach, he saw Archie’s eyes glittered with unshed tears.

“Archie?”

“I thought this is it. I really thought you were going—that you were going to die.”

Archie’s hands rested on Zack’s legs. They had been still, but now they trembled. Archie’s skin was waxy and sticky with sweat.

“No. No, that was never going to happen. Come on, big man.”

Wasn’t it? Zack wasn’t so sure of that, but he pushed the thought aside. He pulled his legs back and shuffled across so he was sitting pressed up against Archie. He took Archie’s hands and squeezed them tight.

“I’m fine now. It’s taught me a lesson to always have my inhaler.”

“But what if that woman hadn’t have been there? What if an ambulance couldn’t have got to you in time? You were in trouble. You couldn’t breathe. I saw you Zack, you were slipping away from me. I want to know what happened out there.”

Zack closed his eyes. Archie would smell a lie, he would see through whatever tale he told him. Zack drew in a long shuddering breath.

“I said that you loved me and I loved you. But you didn’t say anything.
